  1. Mahshid Najafi Successfully Defends Ph.D. Dissertation

  2. Congratulations to Mahshid, who defended her thesis Spatial and Temporal Modeling of Large-Scale Brain Networks, completing this important requirement of the Ph.D. program in Electrical & Computer Engineering. The work covered in her thesis is also available as two papers, one in NeuroImage, and one on bioRXiv.

  1. May is Better Hearing and Speech Month

  2. To raise awareness about communication disorders, the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) has joined the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) in observing Better Hearing and Speech Month each May. Approximately 46 million Americans experience some form of communication disorder. Communication disorders can compromise physical and emotional health and affect the social, educational, vocational, and recreational aspects of life.

  1. Lab preprints now available at bioRxiv

  2. bioRxiv, a preprint server for the life sciences, makes it easy to distribute preprints in a way that allows easy citation and establishment of scientific priority. bioRxiv also recently teamed up with a number of journals to allow direct article submission (including the Journal of Neurophysiology, the Journal of Neuroscience, eLife, and PNAS). As a result, we’ve decided to incorporate the uploading of preprints into our standard, pre-submission pipeline, including utilizing public comments to improve article quality. Our first paper there was uploaded last week (and already revised!): Krishna Puvvada’s Cortical Representations of Speech in a Multi-talker Auditory Scene, bioRxiv https://doi.org/10.1101/124750.

  1. Jonathan Simon is co-editor of a new book, The Auditory System at the Cocktail Party, the latest volume in the Springer Handbook of Auditory Research series

  2. The Auditory System at the Cocktail Party is the 60th volume in the Springer Handbook of Auditory Research series, edited by John Middlebrooks, Jonathan Simon, Arthur Popper, and Richard Fay. It is available now in PDF form, and soon in hardcover. Simon also has a chapter in the volume, Human Auditory Neuroscience and the Cocktail Party Problem.

  1. Presacco et al. Journal of Neurophysiology article highlighted as one of the month’s “best of the best” in American Physiological Society’s APSselect

  2. Alex Presacco’s article Evidence of Degraded Representation of Speech in Noise, in the Aging Midbrain and Cortex was highlighted by the American Physiological Society’s APSselect program from all the society’s fourteen journals as one of nine “best of the best” articles of October 2016.  The article was picked up by a number of media sources, including UPI,  MSN Video, US News & World Report,  Science Daily,  WebMD,  Neuroscience News, and the American Physiological Society.
